Title:
BIOINSECTICIDAL POTENTIAL OF PARTIALLY PURIFIED PROTEINASE INHIBITORS FROM BRASSICA OLERACEA (L.) AGAINST SPODOPTERA LITURA (FAB.) (LEPIDOPTERA: NOCTUIDAE)

Keywords:
Spodoptera litura, Proteinase inhibitor, Brassica oleracea, growth and development, nutritional indices

Abstract:
One group of the insecticidal proteins of plant origin are the proteinase inhibitors (PIs) which are polypeptides of low-molecular weight that inhibit proteolytic activity. The present study was undertaken to assess the deleterious effect of partially purified PIs from the cauliflower Brassica oleracea (L.) against the polyphagous noctuid Spodoptera litura (Fab.). The obtained results show that the partially purified caudiflower PIs have a potent inhibitory activity against the serine-proteinase trypsin. Also, these plant PIs have anti-nutritive and deterrent effect on this pest. A considerable decline in larval weight, mean relative growth rate (MRGR), and food assimilated were noticed.
