Abstract:
The mutagenic potentiality of lufenuron, an acylurean compound, to Drosophila melanogaster was assessed. The observations were carried out after rearing in feeding media incorporated with the LC50 (12ppm) of lufenuron for both the parents (P) and the second generation (F2). In the larvae and pupae treated with 530 ppm, a prominent retardation of the life span was exhibited, particularly at the higher concentrations. Also lufenuron treatments have resulted in emergence of some adults with folded wings of rough texture. These abnormal adults lost the flight ability in both the P and F2. A random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) polymerase chain reaction (PCR) method using random primers was used to identify genetic polymorphisms between control and P adults of D. melanogaster developed from lufenuron-treated larvae. A total of 44 bands (putative loci) was amplified by three of these primers with an average of 14.7 bands per primer. The obtained polymorphic bands represent 45% of the total resulting bands.
